Although I have already talked about the fantastic social media team of Sheffield United, I’m going to talk about them again because of this complete curveball called COVID-19 that people didn’t really see coming. The reason why this is so fascinating to me is because everything is shut down, content creators and social media managers for these major sports teams actually have to come up with new content while nothing is going on with their team or in their sport.
Across the board, I’m seeing a few things pretty consistently. A lot of accounts are going back and looking at previous footage, making highlight reals or funny montages. Another post I see often is catching up with the players and what they’re doing during their quarantine. A lot of brackets and challenges are showing up too.
In these cases, Sheffield United’s social media is not very different then the rest:
Revisiting old matches and memories seem’s to be the main form of social media now. General check in’s and making sure people are staying smart and safe is a common theme too.
But something that I think is really cool that Sheffield is doing which I haven’t really seen before is using video games to play matches and keep people occupied.
I love this move. Not only do I love soccer and the Blades, but I also love video games, it also gives me something to watch, and of course, you can play for as long as you want, as many matches as you want with the squad and have an endless amount of content. They are calling it the #UltimateQuaranTeam which I think is genius. They’re streaming their games on Twitch.tv which is a fantastic platform. I love interactive content like this that gets the fans engaged.
Lastly, one thing that I like seeing and have been seeing a lot is nostalgic clips and funny moments to keep the spirits high in these desperate and hard times.
It’s been a while since I’ve heard a stadium full and cheering an anthem, and I need more of it. We all understand the situation and why this is the way it is, But it’s always nice to be reminded of what has happened and what’s soon to come.
