Champions League? Possibly Us!?

I know, I get it, it’s a long shot. It would honestly probably make the English Premier League look bad. BUT, there is a chance that Sheffield United might make the Champions League.

There is a chance! With Manchester City’s suspension, the last spot looks wide open! I know it’s still early, and there’s a lot of time left. But with 10 matches left, you have to wonder if the Blades can pull it off.

As of right now, the squad is tied for 7th place with 40 points a piece with the Tottenham Hotspur. And the reason why this is such a possibility, in my head, is that between fourth place and eighth place, it’s only five points that separates the bunch. Chelsea, Manchester United, and Wolverhampton Wanderers are vulnerable.

Manchester United is only up two points because Sheffield had to postpone their match this weekend and Man U came out with a draw. As you know from my previous article, I hate draws, but I desperately want other teams to get them to keep Sheffield in striking distance.

These are major clubs Sheffield is dealing with, and of course, people would rather see them in the Champions league than little old Sheffield. But not this guy. Making the Champions league would do wonders for the team, the funding, publicity, and experience could bring the team from upper middle of the table, to the top.

Anything can happen, and I actually believe this now after this past weekend. In the past, Sheffield played Liverpool to a very tight match, some would even say they outplayed Liverpool in their first match up. But at that point, people still thought of Liverpool as unbeatable. Not after this weekend though, Liverpool was embarrassed in their first loss of the season to bottom of the table Watford.

This combined with the, still fresh in my mind, Leicester City title run, makes me think, why can’t that happen with Sheffield. At the beginning of the season, hopes were just to stay in the Premier league, but now I got a taste of winning and I like it. In the future, we could be saying, We are Champions League.

There are cracks in these major clubs, and little clubs like Sheffield are taking advantage. It gives other clubs hope, and is good for soccer. Having a few dominant teams is boring; people want the little guy to win, people support the underdog. And it’s not too late to hop on the Blades Bandwagon.
