The Journey

Not being from England, I’m not an avid soccer fan. But my mother is from England and having half my family still living in England, I need to stay up to date. In any other year, I can just watch the league table, know who’s decent and who are the top players this season.

But here’s where this season gets sketchy. My mom’s half of the family lives in Sheffield.

If you keep up with the premier league, then you know they are the talk of the town. Screen Shot 2020-02-19 at 9.48.28 AM.png

Sheffield is sitting right outside the top 5 in the table. Coming from the lower league, the English Football League, Sheffield United is storming up the table and lingering around in those top spots.

As of this post, not only is the small club of Sheffield 6th in the premier league, because of Manchester Cities champions league ban, Sheffield united is one spot away from a Champions League birth.  This is monumental in the Premier League and is almost unheard of.

There is no hope of winning the league. It’s just a fact. Liverpool is just too dominant, and I know this because my roommate is a Liverpool fan and I hear the games every Sunday morning through our paper-thin walls. Waking up from screams from goals or close calls is not as fun as you might think.

As a new soccer fan, I will be calling it soccer, not football, I’m happy to have a connection to a new team. A few years back, after becoming concerningly obsessed with FIFA 16, the soccer video game, a few of my friends started following the premier league full time. They jumped on the Liverpool bandwagon just in time. A little too perfect timing if you ask me.

But so far, this season is special for the Blades, and I have been actively trying to follow along. I even went as far as to follow them on twitter on Instagram! Being able to actually start following a team that I have a genuine connection too feels special to me, and I would even go as far as to say that I’m proud to be a blades fan.
